“Steve Coogan has demanded United Utilities stop dumping sewage in the iconic Lake Windermere and called on them to clear up the beauty spot.

The Alan Partridge star, 58, joined protesters in the high-profile row as he accused the water firm of 'greenwashing' and 'PR spin' this morning.

The actor - who filmed most of the first series of The Trip in the Lake District with Rob Brydon - spoke from a rally outside the North West water company's offices.

He also called on the Government to compel them to clean up the Cumbria beauty spot rather than pay huge dividends to shareholders.

While Coogan lives in the quiet Sussex village of Barcombe, he has previously said he owns a second home in the Lake District.

The actor appeared today to support Matt Staniek, 28, who is in the 24th week of a 'sewage strike' in Windermere.

In response, Chris Matthews from United Utilities said: 'We are taking this problem extremely seriously.'“
