Projects & Initiatives

Our Programmes

Petitions

The Environment Agency is failing to hold water companies accountable for the blatant exploitation of our natural world. We are calling for an independent public inquiry into the Environment Agency’s failure to regulate the water industry, and for the board of directors of the Agency to be removed.

Satellite Monitoring

Save Windermere has partnered with Map Impact and the UK Space Agency in what we believe is the most innovative data collection project ever constructed to study the inputs into Windermere. Using Earth observation data, this partnership will build a catchment-wide view for freshwater management.

Invertebrate Sampling

Save Windermere has partnered with charity WildFish to launch a Windermere SmartRivers ‘superhub’. The scaled-up hub will sample 15 river sites located on waterbodies which flow into the lake. These sites will help pinpoint the source and scale of pollution in the catchment and monitor changes in aquatic invertebrate populations.

Strike Against Sewage

Save Windermere is striking outside the United Utilities Information Centre in the heart of Windermere every Monday from 9am to 10am, demanding an end to sewage pollution in our lake. Each week, Save Windermere will be joined by guests who are supporting the call to end all sewage discharging in the Windermere catchment.

Legislative Reform

Save Windermere is exploring several options for legal reform, including specific legislative options to protect the lake’s ecological integrity. Several legal advisers and solicitors are currently working on draft legislation as a route to securing the long-term protection of Windermere.

Political Lobbying

We are working hard behind the scenes with policy makers, politicians and other charitable organisations to elevate Windermere in the national conversation. We are engaging with MPs across the political spectrum to develop long-term solutions for the protection of our freshwater.

Awareness & Education

Through our campaign films, social media, press and events we are raising awareness of the issues facing Windermere. Our demonstration held in May 2023 was attended by over 3000 people and the campaign has featured across broadcast news, national press and in several high profile documentaries.

Fundraising

We are actively raising funds to support our fight to protect Windermere. Through individual donations, grants, events and through the support of our partners we are making significant progress towards our goal of saving Windermere. We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who have donated to the cause.
